Government must come to the rescue of Copota School
Zimbabwe
Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
October 05, 2012
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association calls upon the government of Zimbabwe to intervene
in the reported collapse of Masvingo province based Copota School
and workshop of the blind.
Tuesday the 2nd October
Herald newspaper reported that the school is in dire need of financial
assistance and faces collapse if none is offered as possible.
These reports were confirmed
by Mr Jefrey Chiwera who is the Prncipal of the institution. Copota
School; which is situated in Zimuto Communal lands has been home
and workshop to a number of visually impaired citizens since 1956
when it was formed. Financial constraints are reported to have dealt
a deadly blow to the income generating projects that the institution
survived on. The workshop which is run by the students specialises
in making furniture chalk and fence for sale.
Mr Chiwera was quoted
saying the institution has failed to perform to expectation over
the last 12 months and is in need of $50 000 recapitalisation fee.
He added that it currently supports 350 people.
ZimRights therefore
appeals to the government, through the Labour and Social Services
ministry and other relevant ministries for an urgent intervention
to uplift the state of the school. Visually impaired persons are
a group that deserve special arrangements and have an equal right
to earning a decent living as any other person. It is the duty of
the government to ensure that the differently abled and disabled
are well catered for.
