ZimRights rolls sports for peace games
Zimbabwe
Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
September 11, 2012
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association remains resolute in the campaign for a peaceful
and non-violent society. Last week the organization coordinated
a spate of inclusive sports for peace games.
The event which comprised
of soccer for men and netball for women were held in the six provinces
of Mashonaland West, Central, Masvingo, Midlands and Manicaland.
Featuring were hundreds of community dwellers from across the political
divide. Marondera West, ward 10 Community Sports Field hosted the
Mash East tournament, Mt Carmel Primary School in Makoni hosted
for Manicaland, Gweshe Secondary in Chiweshe, for Mash Central and
Pondombiri Township at Mamina Growth Point - Mhondoro hosted
for Mash West. Masvingo and Midlands hosted two each. Mwenezi and
Gutu hosted for the former while while Kaguta in Gokwe South and
Bhamhala Primary School in Zhimbe hosted for the later. Winners
were awarded game kits.
ZimRights carried
out these sports activities as part of its bid to continue facilitating
the dialogue on reconciliation
and tolerance within Zimbabwean communities following the 2008
electoral violence. The election left Zimbabweans divided along
political lines and rural folks were the most affected - hence
the need to embark on such a project. The belief is that; sporting
activities, being entertaining as they are can draw a large number
of people, can provide a platform effective for interaction of people
of various backgrounds thereby creating possibly the first spot
for communication - something which is important.
Previously, similar events
were sponsored in Hurungwe, Mashonaland West and Chirumhanzi, Midlands.
