ZimRights condemns banning of peace-building play
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
September 04, 2012
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights) registers its disappointment with
the reported banning of a peace building theatrical play entitled
"No voice No Choice" produced by Tafadzwa Muzondo.
The Censorship
Board has reportedly banned the play on accusations that contrary
to the peace building concept contained in the script, it is against
the spirit of national healing and that it incites religious animosity
hence cannot be performed in a politically polarized environment
like Zimbabwe. The Artists for Democracy in Zimbabwe Trust additionally
quoted the letter addressed to Muzondo from the Censorship Board
stating that it "observed that the play is about discouraging
the youths participating in political violence in particular and
against political violence in general".
ZimRights however, finds the interpretation misplaced, unconvincing
and misinforming especially considering that the play has already
toured areas beyond national borders such as South Africa, Zambia
and Malawi and has successfully evoked crucial and informative discussions
amongst community members. The play has been well received in such
places. Locally, a Masvingo court ruled in favour of Muzondo when
police attempted to ban the same play in the province during the
Youths Cultural Arts Festival (YOCAF). Further to that, the play
happened to be a 2012 contender of the Outstanding Theatrical Production
category of the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA).
Deducing from
the communities' responses, the play has proven that it is
has made a positive impact on the national healing debate in communities.
We therefore, urge the Censorship Board to be objective for the
good of the industry. We also call upon the National Arts Council
of Zimbabwe to chip in and rescue the victims of these unethical
moves.
