Anjin must be held accountable
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
August 07, 2012
The Zimbabwe
Human Rights Association is greatly perturbed by continued alleged
insensitivity and smoky operations of Anjin Investments - a Chinese
diamond mining
company in Marange. Latest reports have revealed the unimaginable
sacking of more than 1 500 of its workers for allegedly engaging
in an industrial action in which they were protesting against poor
remuneration.
ZimRights is
reliably informed that the diamond Company has been paying its employees
insulting wages which are tantamount to modern day slavery. Further,
there are credible indications of gross human rights abuses against
workers by Anjin management. Workers have been beaten with clenched
fists, kicked around and called racist names by their Chinese employers.
There are also unconfirmed reports of sodomy against the locals
by the Chinese.
The decision
to fire the workers was arbitrary and totally uncalled for. The
action if mismanaged will add up to the impoverishment of citizens
in a nation which already is suffering from acute shortage of basics.
The intolerance shown by the Anjin management in handling the workers'
genuine grievances is unacceptable. The situation warrants urgent
need for investigations and if found to be true, perpetrators must
be brought to book. There is need for governmental intervention
such that order will be restored.
Just a few months
ago, Anjin was cited by the Minister of Finance Tendai Biti as the
major culprit in not remitting anything to treasury. Anjin is one
of the biggest diamond mining companies in Zimbabwe. Its failure
to pay its employees decent salaries adds another puzzle: Where
is the diamond revenue generated by Anjin going?
