Five ZimRights personnel arrested in Karoi
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
June 26, 2012
Police in Karoi
yesterday arrested and briefly detained five Zimbabwe Human Rights
Association employees for allegedly contravening some sections of
the usually abused Public
Order and Security Act (POSA).
The five were
David Palasida, Nancy Madzivire, Rutendo Tsvangirayi, July Chimutsanya
and Reverend Issac Chamonyonga. Contrary to the claims that they
convened a meeting without notifying the police - hence contravening
some provisions of Section 24 of POSA (Chapter 11:17), the five
were implementing legal clinics. Legal clinics by their nature are
not in any way closer to a meeting for they are done on a one on
one basis. No gathering had the five called for or even addressed.
The five were released in the late hours of the day. Thanks to the
Zimbabwe Lawyers
for Human Rights (ZLHR) that swiftly attended to the matter.
We in strongest
terms condemn such continued misinterpretations of the law. We have
had enough of such interruptions to our work and in all similar
previous cases; the state has been found at the losing end. We believe
that these were just efforts to frustrate the work that we do.
