Police should act on alleged sanctuary invasion
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
June 12, 2012
The Zimbabwe
Republic Police should make investigations into the invasion of
Ruware Ranch in the low-veld reported by the Newsday dated June
11, 2012.
The paper reported
that a group of around 500 ZANU PF supporters invaded the area last
week. It further reports that the invaders comprised of about 360
families mainly civil servants each of which got six hectares of
land. It is also said that the group alleges that the land was acquired
through proper means 12 years ago.
As human rights
campaigners, we condemn the manner and occupation of land reserved
for wildlife. Further, the occupied land happened to be one of the
richest wildlife sanctuaries in the Lowveld. As rightfully stated
in the report, Ruware Ranch is under the famous Chiredzi River Conservancy
which boasts of almost all the fauna found in the country. What
ZANU PF is doing is exactly a replication of the past years, a history
of forcibly and unscrupulously acquiring wealth.
We therefore
demand that the police make investigations and bring to book all
perpetrators involved in the act. Political parties have to stop
the use of state resources as rewards for sympathizing with them.
National resources should benefit all and not a few.
