Zimbabwe must promote the vision of the African Union
Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum
May 25, 2012

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) joins the rest of the continent in commemorating Africa Day. The day is an acknowledgement of the founding of the Organisation of African Union in 1963 (OAU), now the African Union (AU). The vision of the AU is "An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in global arena". Since its formation, the AU has endeavoured to ensure and support political and economic integration among its member states, boost development, reduce poverty, bring Africa into the global economy, and promote respect for human rights, dignity, equality, and justice for all.

As Zimbabweans commemorate Africa Day, it is important for us to reflect on our past, our achievements, contemporary challenges and measures we have taken as a country to promote the vision of the AU. In our fight for a better Africa, we acknowledge the central role and importance of good governance, transparency, accountability and the protection of human rights. Despite the vision of the AU, the continent is still grappling with gross human rights violations, dictatorial governments, internal conflicts and poverty. The prevailing situation requires African leaders to stand up to their failures and challenges and champion the vision and mission of the AU for an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.

For Zimbabweans, 25 May is the day when the nation should reflect on its historical governance and human rights record and how this should shape the future.

In particular, the Government of Zimbabwe should interrogate actions that will contribute to an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Zimbabwe free from violence. It should put in place meaningful measures, "driven by its own citizens," which will contribute towards the realisation of the AU's vision and mission.
