Less talk and more action
Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
November 14, 2011

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) once again demands action as regards to the parties to the inclusive government's commitment to tame violence across the country.

On Friday the 11th November, the leadership to the coalition government together with the executive structures of the involved respective parties convened a historic meeting aimed at deliberating issues surrounding the increase in violence that had been recorded in the preceding weeks. We applaud the outcome of the meetings; that violence was condemned in strongest words and that commitments to cascade down the gospel t the bottom rams of political structures were made. Serious considerations were also reportedly made to the police, who of late have been accused of perpetrating violence allegedly through partisan operations.

However, the main concerns emanate from the fact that this is not the first time, Zimbabweans have been given such promises. Two months ago, people were beaten and property vandalized at a time when the president was delivery a peace and tolerate message during the opening of the fourth sessions of the seventh parliament. The country continued to witness such barbarism throughout a series of public consultations on the Zimbabwe Electoral Amendment Bill cascading into the disruption of at least MDC-T rallies without any action being taken.

With such a past full of promises that never materialized, ZimRights demands less talk and more action from GNU leader. Their agreements are noble on paper but are not effective, with many Zimbabweans suffering at the mercy of over-zealous political thugs. We call upon the leaders to focus more on implementation than on delivering speeches that are contradicted by the action of their followers. We demand that all political parties i.e. the two MDC formations and ZANU-PF, to amplify their voices with action.
