  • Farai Maguwu receives the prestigious Human Rights Watch Alison Des Forges Award
The Civil Society KP Local Focal Point

    October 31, 2011

The Civil Society KP Local Focal Point joins Zimbabweans in congratulating the Director of Center for Research and Development Farai Maguwu for being awarded the prestigious Human Rights Watch Alison Des Forges Award for extraordinary activism.

Mr. Maguwu, a member of the Zimbabwe Civil Society KP Local Focal Point, is a leading figure in the struggle by Zimbabweans for orderly and transparent extraction and utilization of natural resources for the benefit of the nation. He has been repeatedly prosecuted and detained by law enforcement agents and been changed under the notorious Section 31 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. Despite all the prosecution and harassment he has remained focused and continued with this important work that CRD remains seized with.

It is in this context that we are delighted by the honor bestowed upon Mr. Maguwu by Human Rights Watch for the sterling work he and the CRD team are doing to create a better Zimbabwe where all people can live together in peace and harmony. This serves as a reminder that although defending human rights is risky, it is an effort that does not go unrecognized.

The KP LFP encourages the Center for Research and Development to continue working with government and other stakeholders in Zimbabwe and around the world to promote a culture of peace, development and respect for human rights in Zimbabwe.
