ROHR condemns ongoing arrest of activist
Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR)
October 10, 2011
ROHR Zimbabwe
condemns the persistent arbitrary arrest of political activist by
the state in the work of violation of individual human rights. The
recent arrest
of the MDC youth Chairperson Solomon Madzore adds to the tally of
MDC political activist being held unlawfully in custody on allegations
of murdering a police officer.
ROHR Zimbabwe
challenges the state to respect the constitution, international
law that govern the principles of a fair trial to which every citizen
is entitled to without prejudice or selective application of the
law. Given the long standing history of widespread abuse of the
judiciary system to further political motives, selective application
of the law and a culture of impunity, ROHR Zimbabwe urges the state
to make a principled stance to redeem itself, do the right thing,
free the prisoners of hope who being held in solitary confinement.
It's an abuse of power and authority for the state to assume
special a privilege to hold people when there is no enough evidence
to proceed with a trial.
Stendrick Zvorwadza, the ROHR spokesperson has slammed the state
for playing a deaf ear to the people's demands for freedom,
a democratic society and fundamental human rights.''
It is a huge cause of concern that the state cannot come to terms
with the reality that Zimbabwe will never be a one party state,
any unorthodox means to discourage multi-party democracy is tantamount
to undermining peace building efforts. There is no going back on
the strides being made on the African continent as the African people
are speaking with one voice to denounce oppressive rule, one party
state mentality and disregarding of human rights for political expediency."
Zvorwadza announced
that ROHR vows to partner other progressive civil society partners
to put pressure on the government and the state to fulfill its mandate
to the Zimbabwean people by acting within the confinements of its
contractual mandate to govern.
ROHR Zimbabwe
notes that the willful disregard for institutional reforms particularly
by ZANU PF, in the troubled coalition government remains a threat
to holding of free and fair elections in the near future.
