Florence Ndlovu set to appear in court tomorrow
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
September 28, 2011
The trial for
ZimRights Bulawayo Regional Co-ordinator, Florence Ndlovu has been
set for tomorrow 29 September 2011.
Ms Ndlovu was
arrested in May 2011
while conducting a public meeting on torture at Tshino Business
Centre in Tsholotsho.
The police and
army accused her of holding meetings on anti-torture; a subject
that they say should not be openly discussed. The charges allege
that the utterances she made during the meeting undermined the authority
of the unoformed forces hence contravening Section 31 (2) (b) of
the Criminal
Law and Codification Reform Act.
She was arrested together with Walter Bongani Dube. The two were
detained at Nyamandlovu police station for two days before they
were secretly transferred to Lupane police station. Howver Dube
was released on
26 May without any charge laid against him.
ZimRights reaffirms
that justice delayed is justice denied and police in Zimbabwe must
carry out their mandate to offer protection to citizens and not
become the threat to security. The continued incarceration of human
rights defenders must stop.
