ZimRights congratulates Zambians
Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
September 26, 2011

Zimbabwe Human Rights Association congratulates the Zambian Electoral Commission (ZEC) for facilitating a credible free, fair and transparent election in Zambia.

Michael Sata, the opposition leader known to his supporters as "King Cobra," was declared the winner before completion of vote counting. Reports are that he was leading with 43% against Banda's 36% with 16 constituencies to go and EC confirmed that the remaining were inadequate for the former ruling party to bounce back. The Patriotic Front win marked the end of a two-decade rule by the Movement for Multiparty Democracy.

We respect the "endorsing" of Zambian's "choice" as coined on the ZEC logo. The reliability has defeated the myth that the ballot cannot facilitate a successful and peaceful power transfer on the African continent.

ZimRights commend the Zambians, as a nation for a successful power transfer despite delays and reports of violence prior to the release of the results. The voice of the Zambians has finally been respected. We encourage other African countries to emulate such respect for democratic values.
