Members of the Zimbabwe National Army terrorise residents

Rights Association (ZimRights)

Close to fifteen
soldiers harassed residents in Waterfalls, in a suspected pay back
for the assault of one of their workmates by some members of the
community on Saturday.
The account
as given by the Daily News dated September 6 2011 states that the
soldiers in question was beaten by members of the community after
he was found in Elim Pentecoastal Church at odd times of Saturday
night and failed to produce identification papers leading to everyone
assuming he was a thief. He said to have mobilised a reinforcement
team from workmates and returned on the following morning to beat
everyone whom they encountered along their way regardless of the
innocence of some residents. Some of the victims were reportedly
hospitalised at Parirenyatwa hospital and a police report was filed
at Sunningdale police station though no arrests have been effected
yet.
In a related
matter, the fourth session of the seventh Parliament
was officially opened by the president yesterday. But as has become
the norm, the event was marred with violence.
This occurred whilst Mugabe was presenting his speech in which he
made the call on non-tolerance to violence. However, two explanations
have been brought up on the source of violence with the independent
media blaming it on ZANU PF hooligans whom they say they were openly
singing their party songs and those that degrade the opposition
leader Tsvangirai whilst the state owned paper said all the political
party supporters shared the blame. An MDC-T councilor for ward 30
in Glen View, Victor Chifodya is reported to have sustained a deep
cut on the head after he was hit with a brick and several other
people were hospitalised.
Meanwhile the
Zimbabwe Human
Rights NGO Forum has released a report detailing the ignorance
of the majority of the Zimbabweans on the existence and functions
of the organ on National Healing and Reconciliation. The Forum indicates
that 74% of the 3189 people from the 84 randomly selected constituencies
are not aware of the existence of such an organ while the remainder
have no confidence in it. It said the latter views the organ as
being without the capacity or the will to purse the agenda.
