Mbare residents punished for snubbing heroes proceedings
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
August 12, 2011
On Wednesday
the 10th August, the ZANU PF youth arm and Mbare based Dakota (formerly
Chipangano) terrorised residents for allegedly snubbing the Heroes
Day proceedings at the National Heroes shrine where the president,
who is also the first secretary and head of the party addressed
the nation.
Alleged to be
sympathisers of the former opposition Movemment for Democratic Change
party, had turned up for party leader Tsvangirai's national
speech during the Defence Forces Day a day later, in attendance
that outnumbered those that graced Mugabe's led proceedings
at the national shrine. A number of unsuspecting soccer supporters
returning from Rufaro stadium for a friendly match between Zimbabwe
versus Zambia testified that they fell victim to the barbaric behaviour
of the ZANU PF militia.
Meanwhile Rosemary
Maya and son Jacob Maya of Maya village, ward 24, Mutasa North Constituency
near Katiyo Tea Estate brought to light of increasing violence in
the area. This came to light as the two sought assistance from ZimRights'
Manicaland Regional Coordinator Rev. Maengamhuru.
Amongst the
complaints raised, is the seizure of their farming fields by ZANU
PF militia and war veterans who sought to rid the area of alleged
anti ZANU-PF "culprits" from an area that is regarded
as a ZANU-PF stronghold. Victims also include Jacob Maya, Benson
Boterere, Gilbert Mutsuwa, Elizabeth Nyagumbo, Patrick Nyamhaka,
Fungai Nyamhaka and Josephat Mupfawa.
A police report
was made but nothing cam out of it except the police's directive
that the victims first engage their headman, Chikomba. The headman
is also said to have done nothing to assist the disadvantaged and
apparently, he is too afraid to preside over the issues that have
political dimensions.
These are some
of the several cases of the vices and infringements of rights that
Zimbabweans have been and are still being exposed. ZimRights demands
an end to such unwarranted violence and intimidation. The society
in which we live is dynamic and we encourage people to stay abreast
with the dispensation of democratic values. We also appeal to traditional
leaders in collaboration with the state police to enforce what is
right for the maintenance of peace and stability in the Zimbabwean
society.
