ROHR Zimbabwe activists due to appear in court today
Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR)
July 29, 2011
Cosmas Ndira,
Kimberly Nyatanga and 11 others currently detained at the Harare
Central Police station are due to appear before the courts today,
after their arrest on
Wednesday 27th July 2011. The 13 human rights activists were arrested
following a peaceful protest at the High Court, against the delivery
of justice.
Zimbabwe Republic
police are holding the human rights activists under unspecified
charge of public nuisance criminal conduct. ROHR Zimbabwe spokesperson,
Stendrick Zvorwadza has condemned the arrests and described them
as a systematic ploy by the law enforcement to deny Zimbabweans
the right to freedom of expression. He noted that the conduct of
the police exposes their bias and lack of will in carrying out their
duties professionally in respect to the upholding of the Rule of
Law.
Meanwhile, Cynthia
Manjoro was granted US $ 500 bail yesterday while the other
7 detainees' bail applications were turned down.
The recent protest
at the High Court has put the judiciary system and the law enforcement
under spotlight in the wake of growing pressure calling for the
reform of these critical state arms in the delivery of justice and
maintenance of peace ahead of the next elections. ROHR Zimbabwe
has vowed to challenge the state to uphold its mandate to the citizenry.
ROHR Chairperson,
Grace Mupfurutsa has extended gratitude to Paradzai Mapfumo, Jemitas
Mare, Sandra Madenyika, the incarcerated activists languishing in
horrific cells and all those who partnered ROHR to ensure that the
cause of fighting for the upholding of human rights remains alive,
particularly in the recent High Court peaceful protest on Wednesday.
