Police summon WOZA members over demonstration

Police have summoned seven Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) members to stand trial on Wednesday 29 June 2011 at the Harare Magistrates Courts for allegedly participating in an unsanctioned demonstration.

Police summoned the WOZA members namely, Vonai Maphosa, Zhuama Njoya, Portia Masawi, Gladys Kausiwa, Felistas Mateveke, Fiona Mazivanhanga and Annastambia Phiri to stand trial at the Harare Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning for allegedly "causing a nuisance in a public place."

Surprisingly, the summons does not specify the date and time when the WOZA members committed the alleged offence.

The police accuse the WOZA members of contravening paragraph 2 (v) of the Third Schedule of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 as read with Section 46 of the said Act by wrongfully and unlawfully and intentionally creating a nuisance by gathering at Africa Unity Square in Harare, where they proceeded into the central business district while singing on top of their voices, dancing and running all over the streets.

The police say such conduct by the WOZA members obstructed free movement of traffic and interfered with the ordinary comfort, convenience, peace or quite of the public or any section of the public.

Lawyers from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights are representing the WOZA members.
