  • ZimRights denounces militarisation of Glen View
    Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
    June 03, 2011

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Association strongly criticizes the militarisation of Glen View area that witnessed the death of a police officer who was murdered early this week in a scenario that has been largely politicised.

Glen View Resident Trust affirmed that most men have since fled the suburb in fear of being rounded up by the police and for those who have remained; an official curfew has been imposed. The residence board added that the community has been flooded with uniformed forces, resulting in a lot of fear and tension in the area. Residents have also complained that the police behaviours has robbed the community of its source of income as the greater parts of the community largely depends on informal sector such as carpentry and vending.

ZimRights strongly condemns the killing of the police officer in the violence and that those responsible must be held accountable. However, the organisation equally denounces the responsible authorities' seizure of the citizens' freedom of movement and association in the aftermath of the incident. ZimRights also condemns the politicization of the matter as this may influence on the investigations thus compromising he court's decision as well as heighten the polarization of Zimbabwean societies a feature that has already been affecting cooperation.
