ZimRights personnel under surveillance
Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
May 31, 2011

Following the recent arrests of the Regional Coordinator and Paralegal Officer in Bulawayo, police details in both uniform and plain clothes have been observed loitering around the ZimRights offices in Bulwayo.

This unconcealed and objectionable police presence around the offices is not only uncalled for but also a major cause for concern as it is obviously being done with the ulterior motive of cowing the personnel of the organisation and other civil society groups who are peacefully going about their business.

ZimRights unreservedly denounces the continued intimidation of its officers and the resultant disruption of the organisation's programmes. This behaviour clearly vindicates those who are calling the institutional reform, particularly in the security sector, if Zimbabwe is to win the struggle towards democracy and good governance. The police are mandated to provide security to citizens and not to instill fear in them. Their detestable behaviour of maintaining order' through strong-arm tactics and intimidation of citizens must come to an end.
