ZimRights Regional Coordinator released on bail
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
May 30, 2011
After almost
a week in detention
without charges laid against her, ZimRights Bulawayo Regional Coordinator,
Florence Ndlovu was finally charged for making utterances against
the police and army that would undermine their authority hence contravening
Section 31 (2) (b) of the Criminal
Law and Codification Reform Act.
She was however,
released on US$ 50 bail.
Ndlovu was arrested
together with ZimRights paralegal officer, Walter Dube who was released
with no charge laid against him. During the period the two were
in detention, it has been established that the two were exposed
to inhuman circumstances. The cells were over-crowded, whilst the
food served was unpalatable. Ndlovu was denied sanitary pads and
an opportunity to bath, a chance she only got the next morning.
ZimRights condemns the gross human rights violation that began with
the initial arrest itself followed by the inhuman conditions that
the two had to live under during their time in detention. Police
should protect citizens from human rights abuses and not become
the perpetrator. ZimRights will not be deterred by the abhorrent
intimidation by the police. The organisation will remain steadfast
in the struggle for the respect of human rights and the rule of
law.
