Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
May 26, 2011
Police in Lupane
have released ZimRights Paralegal Officer, Walter Dube without any
charge laid against him. However, Regional Coordinator, Florence
Ndlovu is still detained facing charges of uttering falsehoods prejudicial
to the state. She is being accused of contravening Section 31 (2)
(b) of the Criminal
Law and Codification Act. Police claim that during the meeting,
she said that the police and army were the main perpetrators of
torture. The matter is set to go to court tomorrow.
This comes after
two days with the police playing a hide and seek game with ZimRights
officials, the detainees and lawyers. The whereabouts of the two
has been kept secret since their disappearance at Nyamandlovu police
station on Tuesday 24 May. Police at Nyamandlovu station had denied
access ZimRights officials and lawyers to the duo since the first
day of detention until today. The two were arrested
and kept at Nyamandlovu police station before they were transferred
to Lupane police.
Meanwhile, the
matter of the impounded "Reflections"
Exhibition pictures that was set for today at Masvingo Magistrate
Court has been postponed. ZimRights officials in Masvingo confirmed
that the public prosecutor was presented with file today and the
trial date has been set for 18th of July this year and that the
state hinted that it will continue by way of summons. The pictures
were impounded in April 2010.
