Police beat WOZA protestors
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)

Members form
the Women
of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) were indiscriminately beaten by police
in Bulawayo yesterday, 10 May during their demonstration
against Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company
(ZETDC), who they claimed are short-changing the public.
The women were
demanding that ZETDC to stop cheating fixed meter consumers, provide
proper timetables of load shedding and urgently put in place a proper
and transparent billing system.
WOZA demonstrators
were ruthlessly beaten while they peacefully protested through slogans,
calling for justice and freedom. Dozens of people were injured by
the police, among them was the WOZA Co-co-ordinator Jenni William.
ZimRights condemns
he unconstitutional behaviour exhibited by the police in depriving
the women of their right to demand proper services from responsible
authorities. This unwarranted police brutality must stop as it goes
against the spirit of the Global
Political Agreement. Zimbabwean citizens have a constitutional
right to pretest or demonstrate when responsible authorities fail
to deliver. ZETDC must fulfill its mandate and fairly provide electricity
to consumers. People in most towns are going for weeks without electricity,
without apologies or action being taken to rectify this anomaly.
