Hon. Lovemore Moyo bounces back as Speaker of Parliament

Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party chairperson and former Speaker of Parliament, Lovemore Moyo was on Tuesday 29 March 2011 re-elected as the Speaker of the House of Assembly.

Moyo was elected Speaker of Parliament after securing 105 votes against 93 secured by Simon Khaya-Moyo, the ZANU PF chairperson and the party's candidate for the Speaker's position during an election held at Parliament Building.

Hon. Lovemore Moyo stopped serving as Speaker of Parliament on 10 March 2011, when the Supreme Court nullified his election as Speaker in 2008 after his election was challenged by Tsholotsho North Member of Parliament Hon. Jonathan Moyo, a politburo member in President Robert Mugabe's ZANU PF party.

But Hon. Lovemore Moyo on Tuesday 29 March 2011 bounced back as the Speaker of Parliament after the defeat of Khaya-Moyo of ZANU PF.

The election of the Speaker of Parliament was full of drama after Hon. Jonathan Moyo of ZANU PF was nominated as a candidate to contest the Speaker's position.

However, his nomination was later revoked by Austin Zvoma, the Clerk of Parliament, who presided over the nomination process after protests from the former ZANU PF critic and Chivi Central legislator Hon. Paul Mangwana, who objected to the nomination.

Zvoma clashed with MDC secretary-general and Harare East legislator Hon. Tendai Biti before proceedings leading to the election after he ordered Hon. Lovemore Moyo out of Parliament chambers after he had taken his seat in Parliament.
