Training of trainers workshop
Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
March 14, 2011

ZimRights held a training of trainers workshop in Watsomba, Manicaland province.

55 human rights defenders converged at Tsonzo Business Centre, although thirty people had been officially invited. These participants were drawn from Mutasa, Nyanga and surrounding Districts.

The trained human rights defenders are expected to spear head civic and human rights education in their respective communities. This is, in the long run, intended to encourage citizen participation in democracy and governance issues as well as inform them on current issues, thus enabling them to lobby and advocate for reformation, both at community and national level.

During the discussion, participants however, pointed out that corruption within the security sector is a major obstacle in the drive for human rights endorsements. They highlighted that the police force is partisan, hence have become inept and lack of objectivity when dealing with political violence related cases. The police are allegedly accepting bribes from perpetrators who want to evade being taken to court.

The extra 25 participants who joined the workshop are a clear indication that Zimbabweans are determined to bring change towards democracy in their communities. Many have suffered manipulation at the hands of politicians who come only to seek votes for them to disappear soon after being voted in. it also shows the great courage people have, as they are now mobilizing each other within communities.

However, ZimRights encourages more women to become involved, since only 14 women out of the total fifty five participants turned up for the meeting. Women should be involved at every stage of development as they form the greater part of the country's population.
