  • Lawyers fight for Gwisai and activists' release as judge set to rule on AG's appeal against Hon. Mwonzora and villagers' bail order
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)

    March 10, 2011

High Court Judge Justice Susan Mavangira will on Friday 11 March 2011 preside over a bail application filed by lawyers representing International Socialist Organisation (ISO) general-coordinator Munyaradzi Gwisai and five social justice and human rights activists.

The lawyers, Alec Muchadehama and Marufu Mandevere filed the bail application on Wednesday 9 March 2011 which has been set down for hearing before Justice Mavangira on 11 March 2011 at the High Court at 9:00am.

Justice Mavangira will also deliver a ruling on an appeal filed by the Attorney General (AG)'s Office challenging a bail order granted to Hon. Mwonzora and 23 Nyanga villagers.

The Judge heard submissions from Edmore Nyazamba, a law officer from the AG's Office and Hon. Mwonzora and the villagers' lawyers Trust Maanda, Tawanda Zhuwarara and Jeremiah Bamu.

Earlier on, Justice Mavangira ruled that the AG's appeal was properly before the court after defence lawyers contested that the bail application had not been properly filed in conformity with High Court bail rules.
