MOZA and WOZA members detained
Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR)
March 01, 2011
ROHR Zimbabwe
decries the further abuse of human rights defenders in the hands
of the security forces, following the recent incident in Enumbane
and Mabutweni in Bulawayo in which MOZA and WOZA members were
heavily beaten and incarcerated by the police. WOZA reports that
seven of its members, who were picked from their houses yesterday,
have been incarcerated under mysterious circumstances, denied rights
to medical attention, legal representation and isolated from being
seen by family members.
ROHR Zimbabwe
does not condone the use of excessive brutal force by the security
forces against unarmed civilians. It is our humble submissions that
the coalition government should protect the rights of citizens and
let the law take its course at all times. We reiterate that human
rights are not special privileges nor gifts bestowed at the pleasure
of governments and politicians but rather God given, non negotiable,
indivisible and Universal as enshrined in the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights (1948)
Meanwhile in other instances,
it is deeply concerning to note that thousands of protesters have
been murdered in cold blood to silence them from expressing their
discontent against the 41 year ruler-ship of Muammar Gaddafi in
the latest events in Libya, chronicling the worst human rights abuses
in the recent uprisings in the Middle East.
