Political temperature towards a Zimbabwean "election"
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
January 27, 2011
The issue of
holding elections this year has become the talk of everyday as the
whole country ponders on whether it is conducive for a free and
fair election.
In Manicaland
Province areas such as Nyanga, Uzumba Marambapfungwe and Mutoko
in Mashonaland East province, people are being forced to attend
ZANU PF rallies and threatened to be "dealt with" if
they do not attend. Many people have pointed out that the 2008
violence is showing signs of recurring as people were in the
same way forced to attend rallies.
In Budiriro
and Mbare rowdy youths have launched a terror campaign while in
other suburbs, soldiers are ironically threatening and terrorizing
people instead of providing security as they are mandated to.
Zimrights is
therefore greatly perturbed by the continued efforts towards holding
an election without the proper electoral reforms.
"How can
Zimbabwe hold a free and fair election when people cannot even exercise
their fundamental rights"
"How is
it possible to create and build democracy through coercion?"
