Deputy Minister of Gender and Community Development Jessie Majome, who is also the spokesperson of the Constitutional Parliamentary Committee (COPAC), has informed that progress in the data uploading process indicate the possibility of the country going for the constitution referendum end of September this year.

She said this at a COCAP press conference she was chairing yesterday, 24 January at the Crown Plaza.

According to COPAC records the data uploading which began on the 11th of this month is expected to be completed by the 25th of January. At the moment a total of 210 rapporteurs and 70 technicians are working tirelessly to upload from their written reports as well as audio and video recordings. Reports show that by the end of Sunday, 23rd January, the team had uploaded a total of 3031 meetings from the total of 4942 meetings held countrywide.

This process will then be followed with the thematic committees sitting to analyse the data, theme by theme. After the committees have analysed all the 17 thematic areas, experts in constitutional law will then draft a constitution using this data. From there the draft will be presented before a Second All Stakeholders' Conference for discussion and debate, and then taken to Parliament for further debate, after which Zimbabweans will be given the chance to vote for or against the draft at referendum.

Hon Majome however pointed out that the progress of the constitution roadmap will be determined mostly by the availability of funds. At the moment she says COPAC has been able to pay the people it is working with through the assistance of their key supporters UNDP. She added that COPAC is still making plans with their funders, including Government, to secure more funds for the next stages.
