United Nations Universal Children's Day
Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
November 22, 2010

ZimRights joins the rest of the world in commemorating the 21st United Nation's Universal Children's Day, which was celebrated on the 20th of November.

As a human rights organization our main priority is advocating for the special needs groups, including children. Children must enjoy their human rights with special care as children and protection. Through the "Youth for Peace" programme ZimRights has engaged children and youths encouraging them to spearhead nation building and initiate projects hence coming up with solutions on how they can take control of their future while enjoying their rights as children.

Realizing and respecting the right to education and health, is the key to an empowered and strong future for not only children in Zimbabwe, but in the world over. Thus ZimRights demands the government to invest and allocate adequate funds in young people in the 2011 national budget. Lack of education and health will only cripple the nation and lead to an increase in poverty, theft and prostitution. As a result of all this there will be high rates of poor health, increased HIV prevalence rate and social seclusion among other development setbacks.

Meanwhile, ZimRights applauds the COPAC team for awarding children and youths special time to gather their views for the new constitution. Their views are significant as they are the holders of the torch of Zimbabwe in the future.

The adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the creation of Universal Children's Day reflects the growing recognition that children are important and valued members of society, now and in the future. Universal Children's Day celebrates children just for being themselves. It reminds us that children need love and respect to grow to their full potential. It is a day to listen to children, to marvel at their uniqueness and all they have to offer.

Let's build Zimbabwe by supporting and developing its future leaders!!!
