Human rights workshop in Mutumba village
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
November 18, 2010
63 people converged
for a human rights awareness workshop held in Mutumba village in
the Madziva area.
Village Head
Mr. Benson Musiyiwa was present at the programme which sought to
develop a culture of human rights. He welcomed the programme, and
said that it is necessary that people be educated on human rights
during the drafting of a new people driven constitution and also
with presidential elections expected next year, 2011. Headman Musiyiwa
informed ZimRights of people who are going around threatening people
to adhere to their political party ideologies, or risk being beaten
and reliving the 2008
victimisation.
Participants
noted that it is important for the government to play its role in
ensuring the respect for people's rights and to safeguard
people against individuals who infringe other people's rights.
The community expressed, with concern, that their freedoms are being
jeopardised and that there is lack of respect for the rule of law.
They said that the previous government, before the Global
Political Agreement, abused the right to education for the children,
hence must now put in place measures that ensure every child affords
to go to school.
They suggested
that government should work out a plan and strategy to attract teachers
back in schools so as to boost the crumbling education sector.
At the end of
the meeting, the people agreed, together with their leaders, to
take the responsibility to restore order and respect of the rights
of every person in their own community. They said they will try
to solve all their differences amicably, be they political or local
resource based conflicts. The youths who were present pledged to
be at the forefront to ensure peace in the community. They also
confessed that they had fallen victim to politicians who bribed
them to perpetrate violence during elections.
As change comes
in stages, ZimRights will continue to do more human rights activities
in the communities, so as to nurture a culture of unity and respect.
