Zimrights advocates for farm workers' wage increase

ZimRights feedback meeting held in Chamba village, Mashonaland West yesterday, 2 November, revealed that a significant number of farm workers have received wage increments.

This action by farm owner, Mr Gumbo is in response to the ZimRights organised meetings with farm owner representative Mr. Gumbo and 11 Hurungwe rural district coucillors, held in July. A representative from Gumbo farm confirmed that half of a total of 70 workers from the farm have since received the adjusted wages, which were increased from USD20 to USD55. He added that the rest will be given their wages after the farm's payment from Tobacco Auction floors are processed.

Although other farm workers said they are still waiting for the promised wage increment, this has been a major development in the farming industry. ZimRights is still negotiating for all farm workers arounf the province and in the rest of the country to get wages that can afford them a decent meal and shelter at the end of the day, with the aim that in the near future farm workers will also be able to afford to send all their children to school and also afford luxuries.

The Zimrights facilitator informed the people that their councilors met and discussed the issue of equal distribution of land, with first preference being given to farm workers . In response, farm workers said they need agriculture inputs if they are to succed in farming, since most them are poor and cannot afford them.

For the next stage of land empowerment, Chamba residents with ZimRights ' assistance will engage the provincial lands committee to speed up allocation of land to farm workers. Menawhile, ZimRights' will not stop engaging farm owners so that they increase the wages of their workers.
