Political violence persists
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
October 19, 2010
A funeral wake
for an MDC activist Sekai Kadyakumbuka was disrupted over the weekend
in Mbare by suspected ZANU PF activists.
The thugs threatened
to destroy the house of the deceased before looting blankets and
electrical gadgets. By this time, most of the mourners had fled
for their lives and sought refuge at Stodart Police Station. Police
went to the house where they arrested one of the suspected party
activists.
Police officers
are reported to have returned the following night on Monday 18 October
and instructed the mourners not to sing. However, Acting police
spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tarirai Dube says police are still
investigating the incident.
Although police
assured the people that case is under investigation, some mourners,
especially family members, are still in fear of a second and worse
attack as promised by the attackers. They warned all MDC members
against attending the funeral. These attackers also made it clear
that there was nothing the police can do to them.
ZimRights castigated
the violent culture that is being fuelled by politicians. Even in
death one cannot mourned peacefully. Zimbabwean youth must be wary
of being manipulated into committing such human rights violations
by politicians. Having learnt from the effects of violence in 2008,
they should be working towards development and democracy and not
destruction.
