ZimRights plays role in revamping community development clubs
Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
October 15, 2010

ZimRights' activities have helped the people of Chiyanike village in Chihota, Mashonaland East to revamp their community development clubs

These clubs had disintegrated over the past few years owing to the political instabilty and economic hardships.

Currrently, three clubs, with the assistance of ZimRights legal office, are working on their club constitutions as a starting point of formalizing them. These clubs include one for women, which will be focusing on piggery project, another one for men taking over the dip tank from the hands of the government under the management of Veterinary department. A child protection club is also functioning to assist with how the community can deal with issues of child abuse. A burial soceity that has since been dysfunctional for sometime due to some financial constraints is soon start functioning.

Other organizations that are working with the people of Chiyanike are Save the Children Norway, Girl Child Network and Women's Trust.

ZimRights has been working closely with ward 10 residents, educating them on human rights issues through these clubs. In addition the organisation will continue to work with these communities ensuring that they keep the community abreast with the current news as well as gathering cases for litigation purposes. ZimRights will also be establishing an information center in the area at Chiyanike Homestead. This was identified as the central point were the villagers can freely go at anytime and get an update of what is happening in the country and worldwide especially concerning rights. The information center will have both written and electronic material necessary on human rights education. Maintenance of these clubs by the members will be a major step towards nation building, starting from community level.
