Zanu PF uses land to lure youth supporters
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
October 11, 2010
Reports have
revealed that Zanu PF has embarked on a land distribution exercise,
as a campaigning strategy in Mashonaland West ahead of the 2011
presidential elections.
A ZimRights
member in Mhangura Ward 6 confirmed these allegations stating that
the party District Chairperson Shepherd Makoni is allocating land
to Zanu PF youths. In the previous 2008 elections youths were manipulated
into assaulting and intimidating people for lame rewards such as
beer. Mr Makoni indicated that this is yet another effort by Zanu
PF to lure youths to their side such that they can exploit them
before, during and after the elections. He added that youths are
being bribed with fake properties seeing that the land distribution
process is being spearheaded by the party District Chairperson without
the involvement of the provincial and district Administrators as
well as other land experts.
ZimRights condemns
the anti-democratic behaviour exhibited by politicians in luring
youths into violating human rights. It is quite disheartening that
while the rest of the people are working towards establishing a
new constitution some are plotting for ways to disrupt the whole
democratic process. Reformation is way overdue for those who perpetrated
violence during the 2008 elections. It is time that every Zimbabwean
takes responsibility for their actions and realise the importance
of working for the development of the country in spite of our political
or social differences.
