ZimRights scoops Crisis' Democracy and Governance Award
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
October 05, 2010
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights) walked away with this year's
Crisis in Zimbabwe
Coalition Democracy and Governance organisational award for
the great effort they have directed to the promotion and protection
of human rights in the country.
The organisation
was honoured with this accolade for engaging the nation in the human
rights, constitution and national healing discourse through its
programmes. Of note was the pictoral exhibition titled "Reflections"
which has resulted in the harassment of the organisation's
secretariat and board. Also acknowledged was the award winning documentary,
"Article VII, Voices for Healing" which speaks to the
healing process as provided for by the Global
Political Agreement (GPA).
Runner up organisations
for this award were the National Association for the Care of the
Handicapped (NASCOH), Centre
for Community Development in Zimbabwe (CCDZ), Zimbabwe
Women Lawyers Association (ZWLA) and Youth Agenda Trust (YAT).
Although they did not manage to get prizes for their organisational
efforts in national development, they were given certificates in
recognition of their efforts.
Other awards
were given to Bulawayo based visual artist Owen Maseko, for the
Democracy and Governance Individual Award; Chief Mutekedza of Chivhu
for the unwavering protection and support he gave to people during
the 2008 violence.
Meanwhile, ZimRights
would like to congratulate Mr Jonah Gokova for his re-election as
the Coalition's Chariperson. Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
also took this opportunity to launch its 10th anniversary logo,
although the Coalition will be 10 years old next year. Mr Jonah
Gokova said the logo is representative of the 10 year old journey
the coalition has had to bear because of the fight for democracy
and legitimacy crisis in Zimbabwe.
The Crisis in
Zimbabwe Coalition annual award has now been running for four years,
with the first award ceremony having been held in 2007.
