outreach meetings have been suspended in Harare due to the rowdy
behaviour characterising most of the meetings, bussing in of participants
and intimidation. However, meetings are expected to resume after
the causes for the confusion are resolved. Outreach teams in the
meantime are continuing on their duties in their respective provinces.
A meeting held
yesterday, 20 September at Arda Balu Estate in Matabeleland North
saw a total of 435 people converging for the meetings. Women dominated
the meeting, while youth participation was low. Some of the popular
issues raised in this meeting were the need for free transport for
all persons over 60 years, unitary government and that the president
should have the power to elect Governors and commissioners on a
professional basis.
The team facilitating
the meeting held at Tchitchekani Primary School on 21 September
faced some challenges. When the team arrived at the meeting point,
there was an unidentified individual who was teaching people on
the talking points who stopped when the outreach team got to the
venue. This did not stop the outreach team from holding their meeting;
they proceeded but indicated the matter in their final report. Towards
the end of the meeting there was some confusion after some participants
started to complain that there were participants who were not residents
of the area. The team managed to contain the situation and finished
the meeting.
Some of the
issues raised in the meeting were that locals should be in control
of natural resources; there should be good living conditions for
workers, the people should be vested with powers to recall the president
and that MPs should be civil servants rather than politicians.
In some of the
thematic areas, it was apparent that the people were ignorant of
the issues at hand. For example, some who wanted dual citizenship
argued that this will enable foreign investors to embark in business
in the country.
