Human rights awareness: A day before COPAC goes into Harare and
Bulawayo
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
September 17, 2010
A day before
outreach meetings kick off in Harare and Bulawayo, ZimRights continues
to go out educating its members on human rights and elaborating
on the talking points that are being used as guidelines in the meetings.
ZimRights officers
went to Highfield today to educate people on human rights, in particular
what the Bill of Rights is all about and how it can be patched up
to make it more people friendly and also to run through the different
thematic areas COPAC is using as guidelines in the meetings, so
that they participate from an informed position. This meeting was
held at the request of ZimRights members in the area.
Of particular
interest to the people was the fact that although human rights are
every being's entitlement that enable them to live a peaceful
and free life, not all of them are legal rigths; and also that the
current Zimbabwe constitution only embraces the first generation
rights, which are the civil and political rights. Thus, the facilitator
encouraged people to speak out on all the rights they want especially
socio-economic and cultural rights that are not in the current constitution.
Participants were encouraged to air their socio-economic rights
because their satisfaction usually results in the enjoyment of civil
and political rights.
ZimRights calls
on all residents of Harare and Bulawayo to go out in their numbers
and make sure their needs are heard. The future of Zimbabwe lies
in the constitution that is in the making. If the new constitution
is a true reflection of the views and values of the people of Zimbabwe
then our future and that of other generations to follow are safeguarded,
because any law, statute or act that will be made after the new
constitution has been drafted and approved will be premised on the
basis of the people's values enshrined in the new constitution.
