Constitution bulletin day 62
Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights)
September 12, 2010
Low participation
has been reported in Tsholotsho, Matableland North.
One of the smallest
crowds had 26 people, with no youth participant. Participants at
the meeting said that they had only heard about the meeting the
previous day in the evening. Other reasons noted for low turnout
in some areas were bad mobilisation and ignorance of the importance
of the process. The forerunners to COPAC outreach teams could not
inform many people of the constitution meeting because they did
not have hailers, so the few people who came across them managed
to access the details of the meetings.
Some thematic
areas are being left unanswered as a result of failure by people
to comprehend them. People who do not understand who the Attorney
General is and the function of the post as well as what warms of
the state are, among other areas. When asked how many provinces
people would want one participant said three; which he noted as
Mashonaland, Matabeleland and Nyasaland.
Meanwhile, Matabeleland
North has the second lowest turnout according to the COPAC report
released yesterday for meetings held as at 6 September. Out of a
total of 648,042 participants nation wide, the province had a total
of 33,050.
