Confusion has
hit the people of Lupane, in Matabeleland North Province, due to
mixed up constitution outreach dates being distributed.
It is alleged
that posters in the area have schedules that do not tally with the
schedules that councilors are announcing. In some instances, the
posters advertise different times or venues of the said meetings.
Villagers are unhappy with the information dissemination saying
it is causing a lot of confusion and this will affect their participation.
Some villagers told ZimRights that some councilors were announcing
the constitution public meetings as human rights awareness meetings
by civil society groups.
A meeting that
was scheduled for the 2nd of August in Mvela East constituency at
Ntuthuko Primary School was fruitless as no COPAC team turned up,
and to date the residents were not given an apology or explanation
for the cancelation of the meeting. The fact that schools are not
closed puts the Lupane residents in a greater dilemma because the
schools were providing more reliable information through the school
children on the constitution update.
Meanwhile, there
was no activity in Mashonaland East, in the Goromonzi area. From
the four meetings that were scheduled for Friday 13 August, none
of the meetings were held, because the outreach teams got to the
meeting points and found no one. This is because the District Administrator
and the Provincial Administrator were not able to go out and announce
the meetings since they did not have fuel.
