ZimRights member harassed by a ZANU PF official
Zimbabwe
Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
July 23, 2010
ZimRights Murehwa North
Local Chapter Treasurer in Mashonaland East, Lovemore T. Muziri
(aged 70) was recently threatened by a ZANU PF official for supporting
non governmental organizations saying they are anti-ZANU PF.
Last week, on Wednesday
14July Muziri was ambushed by a Mashonaland East District Coordinating
Committee member Funny Mavhingire, at Chingwaru Business Center,
in ward 3, Murehwa
Mavhingire was
in the Company of three ZANU PF youths. Muziri was forced to remove
his T-shirt with the inscription "Voice Up" which was
distributed by Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition. After removing the T-shirt, Muziri was
warned against supporting NGOS citing that they are an extension
of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party. Mavhingire threatened
to kill Muzari if he continues to advocate for human rights under
the NGO umbrella, saying that he is now a professional killer, who
escaped scot free in murder cases hence does not hesitate to take
another life.
Muzari went to report
his case at Murehwa Police Station. The police reference number
for his case is now in the hands of the ZimRights legal department.
Meanwhile, ZimRights
Masvingo regional Chairperson Joel Hita is waiting to be tried for
allegedly hosting a public meting without police clearance.
ZimRights condemns the
dehumanization and intimidation Muzari suffered at the hands of
Mavhingire particularly at this time when the COPAC outreach program
is in progress. People are expected to air out what they want included
in the constitution without fear of victimization. ZANU PF loyalists
must desist from intimidating people and realize that the writing
of the new constitution is not a political party campaign strategy,
but a right for every Zimbabwean.
