Human rights awareness in mining communities: Kasimure
Zimbabwe
Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
July 21, 2010
In a bid to
uplift and foster a change in the living standards for people living
in mining areas ZimRights held a public meeting at Kasimure Primary
School in Karoi, Mashonaland West.
More than hundred people
attended the meeting, 70 participants were male and 54 females.
Objectives of the meeting included the need to engage these marginalized
communities on human rights education and lobbying authorities for
better and safer working conditions.
Some of the issues raised
during the meeting included the need to mould and empower youths
that defend and respect the right to education and good working
conditions. In addition, women and youth were also encouraged to
acquire skills to initiate income-generating projects helping them
to become self-reliant.
Participants were urged
to take part on the ongoing constitution making process. ZimRights
officers emphasized the significance of their participation as this
would ensure a people driven document., that will be a positive
step in building a democratic Zimbabwe. Participating in the process
is aright that every Zimbabwean is entitled to exercise, and as
a mining community this would help in ensuring that they bring out
issues that affect them.
ZimRights continues to
give as much civic education, as well as encourage people to take
part in the constitution making process. Mining communities are
usually sidelined where governance issues are concerned, hence the
constitution making process. Mining communities are usually sidelined
where governance issues are concerned, hence the constitution making
exercise offers an opportunity for them to speak and air out their
views.
