ZimRights educates farm workers

Zimbabwe Human
Rights Association (ZimRights) this week hosted a human rights awareness
workshop at Chireshe Business center in Magunje.
The workshop was aimed
at empowering farm workers with knowledge of their rights in order
to reduce manipulation of farm workers and to encourage their participation
ahead of the constitution public consultation in their area.
107 people attended the
meeting. From these people 43 were men aged between 14 and 56 years
while the remaining 64 were female of an average of 24 years.
ZimRights informed the
people that everyone has a right to education and health care facilities.
The officers added that all workers are entitled to good living
and working conditions. If the farm owners have inadequate resources
on their farms to ensure good living conditions they should give
their workers enough money to live in better conditions elsewhere.
At first farm
workers showed little interest in knowing their rights, saying that
they were more interested in financial issue. However after the
discussion with ZimRights officers, the workers started to open
up. They said, because of their ignorance of human rights, farm
owners have been manipulating them and in the same instances, workers
are getting monthly salaries as low as USD$10. Low income has increased
poverty in the farming communities and very few children are enjoying
their right to education.
The farm workers requested
ZimRights to communicate for them to Government that they should
do more to monitor how farm workers ore operating. They encouraged
ZimRights to continue embarking on programmes that look out for
the suppressed voices, with the aid of other organizations that
have the same capacity.
