Maguwu released on bail
Zimbabwe
Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
July 12, 2010
Center
for Research and Development (CRD) director Farai Maguwu was
released on bail this afternoon after five weeks in remand prison.
Harare High court Judge
Mawadze Gurainesu today granted Maguwu bail despite state's
argument that his release will compromise the results of the ongoing
investigation. Gurainesu however agreed with Maguwu's lawyer
that the state is taking too long to investigate, as a result it
would not be lawful to keep Maguwu in remand for allegations that
are yet proven.
The trial date is yet
to be set. However if found guilty of the charges of communicating
the so-called 'falsehoods' deemed prejudicial to the
state, Maguwu might serve a term of approximately 20years.
While we applaud the
judge granting bail, ZimRights slams the delays in handling the
case by the state as well as the continued harassment of human rights
defenders. ZimRights will continue to rally behind Maguwu for the
undeterred struggle against human rights violation
