Mberengwa MP assaults youths
Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights)
July 07, 2010

ZANU PF local MP, Jorum Gumbo, is being accused of allegedly assaulting three youths from Mberengwa West for accusing him of a fraudulent handling of village funds meant for a rural electrification programme.

Trust Shoko, Menard Gumbo and Tafara Zhou, were beaten by Gumbo and ZANU PF youths at Mupesi Business Centre in the full view of the Mberengwa residents at the growth point. Shoko sustained some injuries and had to seek treatment as Maorovo clinic.

An unidentified villager says the trio approached the MP asking him why his homestead was the only place in the area enjoying the electricity facility when the villagers had paid for the rural electrification programme. These funds were received by the MP.

Although Gumbo did not respond to the young people's confrontation then, he invited the three to his shop promising to offer them jobs. However instead of jobs, the three got some whips from Gumbo as discipline. Gumbo was able to beat the youths with the assistance of some ZANU (PF) youth green bombers.

Gumbo's assault of the young people promotes violence at the same time disempowering youths and the future of the country. ZimRights condemns the abuse of power by politicians for their own benefit. Politicians continue to manipulate young people because of poverty. MPs and other persons holding offices of influence should use it for the betterment of society.
