ZimRights launches "Reflections" in South Africa

Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) yesterday launched the "Reflections" photo exhibition at John Moffat Building. Witwatersrand University Main Campus in South Africa.

Over fifty people attended the launch to view the pictures, among them were representatives from National Constitution Assembly (NCA) and Crisis Regional office as well as individuals who have been forced into exile as a result of the political turbulence. In their solidarity speeches, the representatives of NCA and Crisis Coalition highlighted the need to continue telling the story of Zimbabweans. They iterated that the struggle in Zimbabwe is not isolated, but is a struggle for the Southern African region. The whole Region must join hands in the struggle against the continued human rights violations and restoring the respect for the rule of law.

ZimRights only managed to launch Reflections in Harare, Bulawayo and Mutare but not without difficulty as the police continued to interfere. However the launch in Masvingo was a total failure after the police impounded the pictures and have since returned them to date. They arrested the ZimRights regional Chairperson for Masvingo, Mr. Joel Hita for organizing the exhibition without police clearance, Attorney General Tomana has sanctioned the prosecution of Mr. Hita, barely two weeks after endorsing the prosecution of Owen Maseko, Matebeleland Gukurahundi visual artist.

Echoing the solidarity speeches given by NCA and Crisis Coalition, the struggle in Zimbabwe is African's responsibility. The people of Zimbabwe have suffered enough at the hands of politicians. It is time that people join hands to put an end to gross human rights violations, attack on human rights defenders and demand the respect for the rule of law.
