Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)

March 02, 2010

Mutare police on Tuesday 2 March 2010 arrested three Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) employees who were attending a training workshop in the eastern border city.

The ZCTU employees namely Tenson Muchefa, the regional representative for Manicaland, Adrian Mugwanju, a paralegal and Gilbert Marembo, the ZCTU's circulation officer were attending the labour union's Regional Women's Advisory Council's civil and legal training at Mount View Hotel.

Muchefa and Marembo, who were detained at Mutare Central Police Station and were represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) projects lawyer Blessing Nyamaropa were released without any charges preferred against them.

Mugwanju, who was charged with criminal nuisance was later freed after paying a $20 fine after the police indicated that they would detain him and take their time to prepare his docket.

ZLHR will be challenging the payment of the fine by Mugwanju.
