Prison guards from the
Zimbabwe Prison Service (ZPS) on Monday 1 March 2010 seized and
detained freelance photo-journalist journalist Andrison Manyere
and handed him over to the police for allegedly taking pictures
of some alleged coup plotters without seeking the permission of
ZPS Commissioner Paradzai Zimondi outside the Harare Rotten Row
Magistrates Court.
Manyere was seized around
10:00 am as he took pictures of the alleged coup plotters who had
been brought by prison guards for a court appearance on allegations
that they attempted to escape from Chikurubi Maximum Prison, where
they have been held since their arrest in 2007.
The prison guards detained
Manyere in their cells at the basement of the Rotten Row Magistrates
Court until around lunchtime before they surrendered him to some
plain clothes policemen from the Law and Order Section at the Harare
Central Police Station, where he is currently being interviewed.
Zimbabwe Lawyers for
Human Rights (ZLHR) member Alec Muchadehama and ZLHR projects lawyer
Tawanda Zhuwarara are representing the freelance journalist.
Manyere's
apprehension is the second one inside one week after he was seized
last Wednesday by some ZANU PF youths for covering their demonstration
in which they protested against the imposition and maintenance of
targeted travel sanctions on their party leaders.
