ZANU PF councilor victimises Crisis Coalition Team
Crisi in Zimbabwe Coalition
February 26, 2010

Cris in Zimbabwe Coalition intern, Edwin Sithole and Youth Committee members Tichaona Masiyambiri (Youth Allience for Democracy) and Oscah Dhliwayo (Achieve Your Goal Trust) were on the 24th of February 2010 interrrogated, harrased and threatened by Mr Sanyika, the ZANU PF Councilorfor Nhekiwa ward in Uzumba district.

Councilor Sanyika and a group of ZANU PF youths disrupted the outreach meeting convened by the Coalition in Uzumba claiming that it had not been sanctioned by the political party. This was despite the fact that the team was in possession of a police clearance. The councilor then ordered the team to leave the community and to take all t-shirts that had been distributed.

Villagers in the area also alleged that prior to the meeting, ZANU PF youths were threatening them and discouraging attendance to the meeting. Despite the threats, 62 people attended the outreach meeting. Participants noted that the constitution making process has been monopolised by political parties and is not open to every Zimbabwean. One example given was the alleged selection of seven ZANU PF supporters to represent people's views as a ward level meeting convened by some members of the Constitutional Parliamentary Select Committee (COPAC). It was reported that the seven are moving around campaigning for the imposition of the Kariba draft constitution.

The outreach meeting was held under the Voice Up compaign aimed at educating the public on the importance of a constitution and the current constitution making process in Zimbabwe.
