Godfrey
Chimombe released
Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR)
February 17, 2010
Godfrey Chimombe
was yesterday released and remanded to the 6th of March when he
appeared before magistrate Mercy Matsamvi in Bindura. He is facing
charges of undermining the office of the president following alleged
utterances he made on a political rally held on the 6th of February
this year. Magistrate Matsamvi submitted that she needs to get authorization
from the attorney general's office on whether to prosecute or withdraw
the case.
Defence lawyer
for Chimombe, Mr Jena has indicated that there is need to review
the controversial draconian section 33A of the codification
act as it is a direct attack on the people's freedom of expression.
'Like what is going on with POSA
and AIPPA
there is need to challenge this act" said Jena.
With the envisaged
constitutional outreach set to take off soon, it is pertinent that
the inclusive government makes frantic efforts to repeal all pieces
of restrictive legislation to create an enabling environment for
the citizenry to contribute freely without fear of legal persecution
and victimization from the security forces.
