A Victoria Falls
Magistrate Richard Ramaboea on Tuesday 27 October 2009 freed on
bail the National
Association of Non Governmental Organisations (NANGO) Chairperson
Dadirai Chikwengo and Chief Executive Officer Cephas Zinhumwe who
had been in detention since their arrest on Sunday 25 October 2009.
The two NANGO leaders
were represented in court by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)
regional manager for Matabeleland Satellite Office Kucaca Phulu,
projects lawyer Matshobana Ncube, and ZLHR member Gugulethu Mahlangu
of Dube and Company Legal Practitioners. The duo appeared in court
on Tuesday morning and was remanded out of custody on US$100 bail
each.
Chikwengo and
Zinhumwe, who were charged with contravening Section 25(1)(b) of
the Public Order
and Security Act for allegedly failing to notify the regulating
authority of an intention to hold a "public political gathering",
will appear in court again on 25 November 2009. Their lawyers gave
formal notice to the court that they intend to challenge the placement
