Agriculture Minister-designate on Wednesday 18 March 2009 appeared
at the Mutare Magistrates Court for a routine remand hearing. Mutare
Magistrate Sharon Chineka remanded Mr. Bennett to 21 April 2009.
Mr. Bennett attended court in the company of his lawyer Mr. Trust

Mr. Bennett was released
from prison last week after paying US$5 000 bail money, surrendering
his title deeds to his Mutare property, passport and ordered to
report to Harare Central Police Station three times a week on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday between 0600hrs and 1800hrs. His release from
prison followed the dismissal by Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku
of the State's appeal against the granting of bail.
Meanwhile, the
trial of Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Minister and MDC
legislator Advocate Eric Matinenga is expected to commence on Thursday
19 March 2009 at the Mutare Magistrates Court. Advocate Matinenga,
a renowned human rights lawyer is accused of inciting violence during
the run-up to last year's June presidential elections.
Adv. Matinenga,
the Buhera West Constituency Member of Parliament, successfully
sued the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) to have them removed from
his constituency over alleged harassment, torture and political
persecution of MDC supporters in the constituency in violation of
the military's constitutional mandate and functions.
